AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) – Good habits start early in life, and for one firefighter in Beech Island, that means having boots on the ground in 8th grade.

Nico Guzman is already answering the call of duty at just 15 years old. Not only is he helping the fire department as a cadet, but he’s also keeping up academically and playing sports, all at the same time.

Guzman says that encouragement from and the ability to work alongside his parents inspired him to join the volunteer fire service.

“My dad, he’s also a lieutenant here at Beach Island,” Guzman said. “And when I first moved here, my mom told me, ‘You’re going to try this and see how you like it.’ And so, when I first tried it, that’s where my love came from it. And then I started to stick with it, because I love helping people, and I love just doing this with my dad.”

Despite struggling with ADHD, Nico found success through Heron Virtual Academy, allowing him to thrive academically while still being able to serve with the fire department.

“Their school focuses on one-on-one support. And also, their teachers are very understanding. And they support me through everything I do,” Guzman said.

Kimberly Marsh, the Lieutenant of Administration with the Beech Island Fire Department, says it’s incredible that someone like Nico is willing to work for a volunteer fire service.

“All but two departments in Aiken County are volunteer,” Lt. Marsh said. “And so, having a younger generation wanting to come in and do what we do, and do it free of charge on their own free time, it’s fantastic to me.”

Nico hopes to continue his training with the Beech Island Fire Department. His goal is to be a certified firefighter by the time he turns 18.
