Building a Brighter Future: How One Student is Finding His Path at Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina
Nicholas “Nico” Guzman is an eighth-grade student at Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVASC) and in just a few months, he has discovered what the right learning environment can unlock.
After moving to South Carolina at the start of the school year, Nico enrolled at Heron and quickly found a school experience that finally fits both his goals and his busy life.
For Nico and his family, the decision to switch to virtual school marked the beginning of a new chapter – one built on flexibility, personal support, and opportunity.
A Fresh Start That Fits
Before coming to Heron, Nico attended a traditional school and struggled to stay on track. After relocating from Connecticut to Aiken County, his family began exploring new options.
“Where I used to live, I used to get in a lot of trouble in school,” Nico explained. “My mom told me I was going to be doing online school, and it’s been really good for me.”
His mom, who serves as his Learning Coach, says Heron’s smaller class sizes and personalized approach were key factors in choosing the school.
“Heron has a smaller class size,” she shared. “They are available for more individual learning. It fit what we needed for him now.”
Teachers Who Truly Show Up
At Heron, Nico isn’t just another name on a roster – he’s known, supported, and encouraged. When Nico struggled in math earlier this year, one teacher went above and beyond.
“One of his teachers spent an entire day working with him until he understood the material,” she explained. “They give him that individual time.”
That kind of support has made a lasting impact on Nico’s confidence.
“Ms. Cox got me,” Nico said with a smile when asked about his favorite class. “Math is fun.”
Balancing School, Sports and Big Goals
Virtual learning allows Nico to fully pursue his passion for sports – especially basketball and football.
“He does school from 8 in the morning and finishes about 2 pm,” his mom explained. “Then he practices basketball Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 7 pm.”
Next year, Nico plans to play sports for a brick-and-mortar school while continuing his education online.
Thanks to Heron’s flexible model, he’s also able to accelerate academically.
“He’s already started classes that will not only cover eighth grade, but also give him ninth-grade credits,” his mom shared.
Building Confidence – One Story at a Time
One of Nico’s favorite ways to connect with classmates and teachers is through storytelling – especially stories about his chickens.
“He actually brought one of the chickens on camera during show-and-tell,” his mom laughed. “Everyone thought it was great.”
That comfort with sharing has helped Nico build strong relationships at school.
“They ask him about things,” she said. “They really take the time to know him.”
A Future in Science and Service
In addition to sports and school, Nico is already serving his community as a junior volunteer firefighter. He trains with local firefighters and even participates in controlled training burns.
“Twice a year, he gets to enter a burn building,” his mom explained. “He’ll get to do his first one in April.”
By the time he turns 18, Nico is on track to be fully certified.
“When he turns 18, his certification will be mailed to the fire department,” she said. “He’ll be a fully certified firefighter.”
If a professional sports career doesn’t work out, Nico already knows what he wants to pursue.
“He wants to do fire science so that he can become a fire investigator,” his mom shared.
Growth, Confidence and New Life Skills
The academic turnaround has been just as powerful as his personal growth.
“In Connecticut, he had C’s and D’s,” his mom explained.
Last semester, Nico earned AB Honor Roll.
More importantly, he’s learning how to advocate for himself.
“He’s able to ask for help now,” she said. “In the past, he wouldn’t feel comfortable saying, ‘I need help.’”
When asked what life skills he’s building through virtual learning, Nico didn’t hesitate.
“Time management,” he said. “And being smart.”
Knowledge is Power
For Nico and his family, Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina has become much more than a school – it’s a place where he’s been able to rebuild confidence, pursue his passions, and plan for a meaningful future.
With the flexibility to learn from anywhere, the support of teachers who truly care, and the freedom to chase big dreams both on and off the court, Nico is discovering just how far the right learning environment can take him.
