Leading the Way at Heron Virtual Academy: Elizabeth’s Story
When Elizabeth joined Heron Virtual Academy in 2023, she brought determination, resilience, and a newly discovered passion for leadership. As a senior, Elizabeth quickly became the president of Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG). Heron is the only virtual school in the nation to offer this program.
Elizabeth’s journey to virtual learning began with a health challenge. After contracting COVID pneumonia during her ninth-grade year, she found school difficult to navigate. Heron’s virtual model allowed her to continue her education while attending doctor appointments and traveling for family needs, all without missing a beat. Today, she and her brother, also a virtual student at Cyber Academy of South Carolina, consistently achieve A/B honor roll status.
At Heron, Elizabeth thrives in JAG, where she’s learning leadership and career-readiness skills. The program helps students find success beyond high school, from writing resumes and cover letters to preparing for the workforce. As JAG president for the school, Elizabeth organizes community service initiatives, like writing letters to veterans, creating holiday cards for children at St. Jude’s Hospital, and coordinating local food drives, while also guiding other students through competitions and conferences, including the National Student Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C.
Elizabeth also credits the JAG program with sparking her political ambitions. Inspired by her experiences and exposure to government leaders during a trip to D.C., she plans to pursue political science in college with a minor in American history.
“Being JAG president has taught me independence, leadership, and time management,” she shares. “It’s helping me prepare for a career where I can make a difference.”
Heron Virtual Academy offers students like Elizabeth the flexibility to balance health, family, and academics while providing a high-standard educational experience. Through programs like JAG, students are developing the skills, confidence, and leadership abilities they need to succeed – both in school and beyond.
