Creating Balance Through Virtual Learning
For Kyniah, a senior at Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVASC), school is just one part of a very full and busy life. Enrolled since 2024, Kyniah transitioned from a traditional public-school setting to virtual learning because she needed an education that could fit around her responsibilities outside the classroom – and Heron provided the structure and support to make that possible.
As a self-enrolled student, Kyniah serves as her own learning coach, managing her coursework independently while balancing responsibilities far beyond the classroom. She plans to graduate in the spring of 2026 and is already laying the groundwork for her future.
Balancing School, Work and Family
Since she was 16 years old, Kyniah has worked multiple jobs to help support her family. At one point, she was working three positions, all while staying on track academically. Today, she continues to work while also helping care for her two sisters and supporting her grandparents with household bills.
In addition to work and school, Kyniah often babysits her cousin and helps her sisters with their schoolwork.
“My world just revolves around them,” she says. As the oldest sibling, she carries a lot of responsibility – and a lot of love – for her family.
A Calmer and More Supportive School Experience
Before enrolling at Heron, Kyniah says juggling everything felt overwhelming. The traditional school setting added stress to an already demanding schedule.
Virtual learning changed that.
“I can get my work done easier and stay focused,” she says. Heron’s model allows her to work at times that fit her schedule, rather than the other way around.
Kyniah also credits her teachers for making a difference.
“My teachers are very supportive and always there when I need them,” she says. That support has helped her build confidence, especially when it comes to communicating and asking for help – a skill she struggled with before.
Discovering Interests and Career Goals
Academically, Kyniah has found classes that truly resonate with her. Math has always been a favorite, and she’s currently enjoying a marketing course – a class that connects directly to her future goals.
“I feel like marketing just comes naturally to me,” she says.
Kyniah plans to pursue a career in real estate after graduating high school and hopes to attend real estate school right away. Inspired by an older cousin who works in the field, she’s been interested in real estate from a young age, tagging along to showings and learning the basics early on.
Developing Skills for the Future
Beyond academics, learning at Heron has helped Kyniah develop important life skills. Managing her own schedule has strengthened her time management, and frequent communication with teachers has helped her become more confident in asking for help.
With determination, resilience, and a strong sense of responsibility, Kyniah is proving that success doesn’t look the same for every student. At Heron, she’s found a learning environment that supports her goals – in school, at home, and beyond.
