A New Era in Learning: Celebrating National Online Learning Day with Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina

Stories & Spotlights

Families are looking to virtual school options now more than ever since the pandemic. A recent survey by the National School Choice Awareness Foundation found that 60% of parents considered sending at least one of their kids to a new school last year, and 27% of those parents explored a full-time online option.

This shift reflects a wider transformation in education. More parents are recognizing the value of personalized learning that adapts to their children’s needs. Online learning challenges the status quo of the traditional school model and encourages us to imagine what learning can look like.

As the only alternative virtual school in South Carolina, Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina serves students, grades 8 – 12, who may be off track due to poverty, expulsion, homelessness, or other life circumstances, providing them with the resources and structure needed to succeed.

On September 15 – National Online Learning Day – we celebrate the caring and connected community that Heron is building for students across the state:

Flexibility

Heron breaks free from the constraints of the one-size-fits-all traditional model, offering student-centered, personalized learning at the center. Whether a student needs to move at a different pace or benefit from one-to-one instruction, online learning allows them to engage in a way that works best for them.

Personalized Attention

Online learning at Heron offers a strong and personalized academic support system to guide students every step of the way. Students benefit from small group instruction and one-on-one guidance from state-certified teachers who are dedicated to student success.

Safe and Supportive

Feeling safe at school is important, and research shows that a sense of safety supports stronger engagement, academic achievement, and high school completion. It’s also associated with lower symptoms of anxiety and depression. For many South Carolina families, Heron offers a secure environment allowing students to thrive.

Strong Curriculum

Heron gives students access to a comprehensive learning experience from the comfort of their home. This includes an award-winning K12 curriculum, taught by certified South Carolina educators, and all the resources students need to succeed, including structure and flexibility.

Possibilities

Heron prepares students for the future by immersing them in innovative technology and hands-on experiences. Students develop essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration – all in an engaging, interactive environment. Heron also offers students the opportunity to earn college credits or gain job-ready certificates while still in high school. These opportunities inspire students to look toward the future with confidence.

It’s important to remember that the student population is made up of individual children, each with their own unique needs and goals. For many in South Carolina, the traditional school model isn’t the best path to success.

This National Online Learning Day, we celebrate the power of relationships, community, and care in online education. At Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina, students aren’t just learning, they’re thriving in an environment built around them.
