Meet Heron Virtual Academy’s Director of School Programs, Jennifer Overholt-Mau

Guidance & Support
Meet Jennifer Overholt-Mau

When Jennifer Overholt-Mau joined Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVASC) at its start, she brought a passion for student success and a wealth of experience in higher education and career readiness. Now serving as the school’s Director of School Programs, Ms. Overholt-Mau helps ensure every student has the support they need to thrive in an online learning environment that’s rapidly growing – and transforming lives along the way.

Helping a New School Soar

Ms. Overholt-Mau previously led College and Career Readiness for Cyber Academy of South Carolina. When HVASC opened, she saw an opportunity to help build something meaningful from the ground up.

“Almost the entire staff was brand new,” she said. “We realized we needed more intentional leadership in the high school as it grew, and it was growing fast.”

Her role quickly expanded: mentoring teachers, training new school leaders, building programs, supporting enrollment, and helping HVASC more than double in size in just three years.

A Week Full of Purpose

No week looks exactly the same. However, each week is centered around supporting students.

“I attend leadership meetings, collaborate with our academics team, make sure we’re compliant with state requirements, and work closely with our College and Career Readiness office,” Ms. Overholt-Mau explained. “A big part of my job is looking forward and planning what comes next for Heron.”

She especially enjoys working with the high school and junior high teams to keep learning on track and aligned with students’ goals.

Where Career Paths Begin

One of HVASC’s top priorities is helping students graduate ready for life – whether that means college or jumping straight into a career.

“Our students can earn certifications that show they’re prepared for the workforce,” Ms. Overholt-Mau said.

Currently, HVASC offers Microburst credentials focused on professional skills, with additional certifications rolling out this year to better match students’ pathways – including business, marketing, general management, and digital technology. New courses, like Game and Interactive Media Design, are growing opportunities in creative fields.

“That pathway is brand new,” she said. “We expect interest to continue growing because it’s booming in the real world.”

Why Virtual Works

Families often come to HVASC searching for a learning environment where their student feels supported and safe. Ms. Overholt-Mau wants them to understand that virtual school is not the “easy route.”

“People think we just award diplomas, and that is not the case at all,” she said. “We hold students accountable. They have the same standards, the same rigor. It’s just delivered differently.”

The school’s flipped-class model allows teachers to meet one-on-one or in very small groups during class time, giving every student targeted academic support.

“We have to make sure students are truly mastering content,” she said. “And we’re checking in with them as people – their wellbeing matters.”

She’s seen teachers go above and beyond to help students succeed – including one graduation coach who drove to a senior’s workplace to ensure he completed a required exam.

“That’s just one example,” Overholt-Mau said. “Our staff cares so deeply.”

A Support Team for Every Student

Each HVASC student has access to layers of support: counselors, success coaches, career guidance, and special interest programs – including student groups for health and wellbeing, teen parents, and more.

“Our success coaches have smaller caseloads on purpose,” she said. “They stay connected, especially for those balancing school with work or family responsibilities.”

Because many Heron students are juggling real-life challenges, having adults who show up for them can make all the difference in their education – and their life.

Preparing For the Future – One Student at a Time

Whether a student needs the time to work at a job, has health needs, or a fresh start after struggling in a traditional setting, Overholt-Mau believes HVASC provides the opportunity they deserve.

“The staff here is the most incredible group of humans I’ve ever met,” she said. “We will give your student every possibility to be successful, and we’ll be right there encouraging them all the way.”

Thanks to leaders like Overholt-Mau, HVASC is not just a school – it’s a launchpad.
