Making Reading Fun for the Whole Family

Stories & Spotlights
National Literacy Month

At Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVASC), we encourage students to be curious, creative, and confident learners. Reading is at the heart of that journey. During National Literacy Month, families can celebrate by making reading part of everyday life.

Here are three ways to help your student discover the joy of books:

1. Make Reading Interactive

Create a “book club” atmosphere with your student and ask them questions or encourage discussion while sitting around the dinner table. These conversations not only build comprehension but also critical thinking skills.

2. Connect Hobbies and Interests to Reading

If your student loves art, pick up a biography of a famous painter. If they’re into sports, share an inspiring story about teamwork. At HVASC, we know students thrive when learning reflects their passions and books are a great way to tie their interests into academics.

3. Celebrate Progress

Whether your student finishes their first chapter book or discovers a new favorite series, celebrate it! Small rewards, recognition during family dinner, or even a shoutout in your home “classroom” can build motivation and make your student feel proud.

This National Literacy Month and beyond, HVASC invites you to slow down, grab a book, and enjoy the adventure that reading brings. Together, we can nurture a lifelong love of learning – one page at a time.
